Hi friends,

John got an a good hour or two of detecting this afternoon. Uncover the variety of items including a thimble, an engraved tweezers (that has remains of silver plating), a couple of unknown objects, a cool raised button, a small buckle, and a pretty nice shield nickel, 1871. One strange item is a button-type object with the word zippo on it. Obviously, it's not a lighter, LOL. Any ideas on that one? Happy hunting, all, and thanks for looking. -Lisa & John

That's a nice old domed button you have Lisa. The targets are getting small but I bet there's a lot more. Try different swings, settings, and frequencies.

Still digging great things there, Lisa! Something tells me John's going to hit a big pocket of old silver and copper somewhere there...it's definitely not even close to being hunted out! Ddf

Thanks, Steve. John has been experimenting with his coils. He was using the giant now, then he switched to the tiny Garrett 5x8 AT series, and that thing is finding signals even in areas where he's already been. It's quite amazing. And fun. Do you know anything about those big domed buttons? John thinks he can see faint writing on it, but he can't make anything out. Just curious. Thanks, L&J

DDF, I think you're right. I was just telling scrappy that John is using his tiny 5 x 8 coil, and it is hitting all sorts of targets in areas where he's already been. Thanks for looking, and for your awesome enthusiasm. -L&J

Cant tell from the pics of the shank, but your large domed button resembles these early French buttons.

Hey BP--what awesome links! You're right, I think the domed button most closely resembles the French military one. I'll have to take a closer look at it when I go to John's this weekend. Can't thank you enough for the great references. Take care, ~L&J

What You Need to Know About Zippos and Lighter Fuel

A cool article, but the caption that goes to the pic you posted says:

IMCO Lighters

There’s an English chap on eBay selling IMCO lighters. Developed in the 1930’s, they’re made in Austria and appear to be Europe’s answer to the Zippo. From the eBay sales pitch:

“These lighters are a great piece of kit, they are more user friendly than a Zippo, cheaper and double up as a candle . . . Runs on Lighter fluid or Petrol . . . IMCO has produced and sold over HALF A BILLION (yes half a billion!!) lighters . . .”

So...not sure? But you've set me on the right track! Must be from a trench or candle-type lighter. Thanks so much! -L&J

Nice digs! The 5x8 coil is the best on the AT Pro! Finds a lot of items that the bigger coil misses. Especially in iron rich ground. Love seeing how much you are getting out of your site.
