I know I haven’t been posting many of my finds lately, but today Truth and I returned to the old Spanish fort (Fort St.John) along the lakefront in New Orleans. I brought the Cortes out with all intentions of homing in on some of those “Buff’s” Truth’s been racking up on.

After about and hour or so of digging a few clads, can slaw, melted lead blobs and a ton of pull tabs with beaver tails I finally dug something that was worth posting.

As you can see below it appears to be plated with what looks like copper or brass. At first, I thought it was gold gilt, but after gently cleaning it up I could see the plating along the top, which is engraved with a flower, leaves and stem.

I personally think it’s a cuff or vest link, but I’ve never personally dug or seen one made in this shape and style before. Maybe someone will know exactly what it is and hopefully help date it.

Thanks for looking, take care, HH and God bless!!! “D”

When I first saw it I knew it was something amazing. I immediately wanted to grab it and run (in my head) but my first guess was a beautiful square cufflink that had a special look. I was happy to see Possum find what I saw as true treasure. It came out more beautiful then I thought. Great job for a place that’s been pounded out for 40 years, but got lazy on mid tones from all the pulltabs LOL

D', Congrat's on a very nice find. I also vote on a cufflink. A very pretty and ornate piece. Well Done. Best of luck to you and Truth in your future hunts.

Congrats! Nice find!

Ladies cufflink by the size and floral pattern? I don't think I've ever seen one.

Best wishes Possum

I've never dug so many pull tabs and beaver tails in my life!!! Lol, but we're not going to give up on it, that little spot still has some nice stuff waiting for us to find and save!!! "D"

Just a swag possum! I'd say pre civil war up through the 1890s. If I remember right you said you didn't think it was gilt. To me, that would be the period of time when gold was at it's scarcest.
I'd say any period of time when the political unrest was such that people hoarded gold, just like today.

I appreciate your quotations, I had seven great grandfathers in R E Lees Army of Northern Va. and at least 1 of them was in the 33rd Va under Stonewall Jackson. Great men and very much affected by their times. Lee stopped at an estate in my town on the way back from Gettysburg. He drank a glass of buttermilk because he couldn't stomach anything else. Was that an ulcer or the beginning signs of the heart disease that killed him?

best wishes!

I found one similar to that...just the square part, the other part was missing. Unfortunately the picture doesn't show the gold colour. I think it's the same kind of thing.

the one I found does looks very similar to yours, I'd probably go out on a limb, knowing you found it in eastern Canada that it's probably of French origin, which means it could be from as far back as the French occupation of Louisiana all the way to the 1890's like Phil suggested. Thanks for the post... "D"
