From the link...latinum is usually suspended within gold to produce "gold-pressed" latinum. I thought that was to mean it was something like a twinkie, with the latinum being the creme filling and the cake being the gold.

Well the way I saw it explained in some Trek lore was that they made a shell of the gold and then put latinum in the middle. If I am not mistaken in the episode where they first showed the Ferengi they were upset because the communicators were made out of gold and pointed it out to the Guarian or the Portal or whomever the guy in black with the stick with a blade on the end was. The Last Outpost if I am not mistaken.
