Did you spin it to see if it works? Where do you think the Indians used it? I mean, what kind of surface did they have that was flat and smooth enough to make it work? I've never seen or heard of those before. Neat item. Gary

What I paid for it dictates, the last thing I want to do is try and use that thing the way they did. I’m sure you know what modern damage does to the value of a nice artifact.
i imagine any hard flat surface would have sufficed. It could be post contact so there were probably some table tops around too.

I know very little as i had never heard of these until the night before the auction, when the seller, an expert on dakotas artifacts informed me that an odd piece I had found years ago was actually a top. I had brought it to show him, as after many years no one including two state archeologists Could tell me with certainty what is was. . And he informed me that they are very rare.
Since as it turned out I already had one of these specimens, I figured I might as well become a collector and went after this one offered on the sale. Judging from the bidding and where the price went, I can tell you, they must be sought after.
