Yesterday, I worked about 4 hrs in the 2-3 ft surf and even with a 25 lb weight belt I was tossed like a toy, beaten and battered and with little to show for it except a great workout.

The seaweed was thick and extended about 30 ft out into the water. Swinging your detector was futile and my water scoop clung seaweed like a bad toupee. You had to work in about 4 ft of water to avoid the seaweed, for the most part. With many of the larger waves, you had to jump-up so as not to be covered by water. It worked for me, except for one wave that came about a foot over me and luckily I had my glasses guard on; otherwise, I would have been searching for my own glasses in the surf.
The shore was covered everywhere with seaweed. In some places, the seaweed had a light covering of sand and when you stepped on it your foot sunk a foot. Also, it seemed that the seaweed held tons of aluminum junk, everywhere. I worked it for a while but aluminum, aluminum, aluminum. Also, there were gobs and gobs of shells everywhere. Have to try another beach tomorrow.

Next Day
Today I went to two beaches and at the first beach I decided to work the sand and concentrated between the high tide line and water line. The seaweed wasn't nearly as bad as the beach the previous day, thankfully for me. After 3 1/2 hrs I had found the typical number of coins, 6-8/hr or about 20. I also found a nice "S925 ALE 54" sterling silver ring with a 1/2 ct yellow stone. I wonder if "54" means 1954?

Next, I decided to go to Paradox beach - so named because I find tons of old, green, deteriorated coins there but NO GOLD. I bet in the past year I pulled about 800 coins from the beach and not a single piece of good jewelry. And I keep looking. My heart pounded as I turned the corner to the beach and saw a workable amount of seaweed. I worked from dunes to water line and I pulled about 60 coins from the beach in 3 hours...but no jewelry.

Finally, for those of you, like me, who struggle with some targets in the surf that no matter hard you try you just have to give-up after awhile. Here is what we may be dealing with, sometimes. Below is a pic of a 5mm and 8mm fishing weight next to a dime. These targets are heavy and quickly sink to the bottom and right out of my scoop. I recovered both small targets in the wet sand with the help of my pointer.

I'll have to remind myself of these types of good sounding targets the next time I'm fixating on an unrecoverable target...move-on...move-on. Watch-out for those pull-tabs, too.

On the west coast, after the big storm that came in over the weekend. Have to wait until next week when the surf settles down to hit the water. Figured the storm mixed-up things and great time to metal detect the surf and beach, although I didn't figure on all the seaweed - Yuck!
