Note: slight rule change for Canadian searchers.

I have always wondered what is still left in circulation (variety wise).
So for 2007, I set up a tracking spreadsheet to keep track of which coins I find in circulation.

As each coin listed is found, I will mark it as found and the list will shrink.

The idea is to see if, amongst all CRHers out there (at least those who contribute to this forum), how much variety can be found in circulating coins.
It can also answer such questions as, can a complete set of Franklin half dollars be found in circulation in 2007.

This first post will contain the rules that are being used.
The second post I will keep updated with a list of the coins remaining to be found for the following list of US coins that may be found in circulation.
-------------------
Indian head pennies
Lincoln wheat pennies
Lincoln memorial pennies
V-Nickels
Buffalo Nickels
Jefferson Nickels
Barber Dimes
Mercury Dimes
Roosevelt Dimes
Barber Quarters
Standing Liberty Quarters
Washington Quarters
Statehood Quarters
Barber Half Dollars
Walking Liberty Half Dollars
Franklin Half Dollars
Kennedy Half Dollars
Eisenhower Dollars
Susan B Anthony Dollars
Sacagawa Dollars

The following coins are also set up for tracking, but until some are found they will not be listed in the second post.
Flying Eagle Pennies
Nickel 3-cent pieces
Shield Nickels
Seated Liberty Dimes
Seated Liberty Quarters
Seated Liberty Half Dollars
Seated Liberty Dollars
Trade Dollars
Morgan Dollars
Peace Dollars

Here are the current rules (will be adjusted if necessary as the year goes along):
1) The list includes all regularly issued date/mintmark combinations of standard US coins.
1A) If a coin has multiple varieties (i.e. Large Date/Small Date, Large mintmark/Small mintmark, Type 1/Type 2, etc). then each variety will be listed separately. I will also keep a more generic listing for those times when it is not clear which variety is found and the poster can not provide a picture or the coin can not uniquely be identified.
1B) Error coins and die varieties count, but only as a date/mintmark combination. In other words the 1955 DDO penny, would only count as a 1955 penny.
2) The list includes all date/mintmark combinations that were not intended for circulation such as coins from proof sets or mint sets.
2A) If a proof coin also has a standard issue coin with the same date/mintmark combination it will only be listed once unless there is a unique way of identifying it such as silver versus clad. In other words Silver proof coins will be listed separately.
3) Coins must be found in circulation, (rolls from the bank, in the "take a penny" jar at the local gas station, in change from the store, from slot machines at the casino, etc.)
4) NOT counted, coins found while metal detecting.
5) NOT counted, Coins found prior to 2007.
6) NOT counted, coins found buying others coin collections, old piggy jars at rummage sales, etc. as they are no longer truly in circulation.
7) Counted, only coins which can be identified (either by legible dates or using marking that are a single year type such as the 1883 No Cents V-Nickel) count.
8) Counted, coins which can be identified only after treating with acid so long as both the date and mintmark can be identified.
9) NOT counted, coins with counterfeited dates/mintmarks except as their original date/mintmark combination, if it can be determined.
10) Counted, a cumulative list of commemorative US coins will be kept, if reported.
11) Counted, US coins found in any country in the world, so long as they are circulating. In other words a Us coin found in Canada counts.

Also, I will be keeping a cumulative list of the different countries from which foreign coins are found. But some additional rules will apply for foreign coins:
12) Foreign coins must be found in the US or Canada and they cannot be transported in by travel out of the country of origin. (as that would make it too easy)
13) Since Canadian coins are found quite readily in US bank rolls, I decided to add tracking sheets for the follow Canadian coins as well:
13a) Any Canadian coin found in Canada that has not yet been found will be changed to Blue
13b) Any Canadian coin that has been changed to Blue will be changed to Red if later found in the US.
Canadian penny
Canadian nickel
Canadian dime
Canadian quarter
Canadian half dollar
Canadian dollar
Canadian 2 dollar

****************
* Important Note
****************
I plan on tracking the different finds listed in all other topics as well as ones listed here since I read them already, but if you want to be sure I don't miss something enter it under this topic.

Regarding what to report:

I will assume the following "common" recent dates will be found so there is no need to report them:

Lincoln Pennies:
* 1959 - 2007 Philadelphia (except for 1960 small date)
* 1959 - 2007 Denver (except for 1960 small date)
* 1968 - 1974 San Francisco (except 1970 small date)

Nickels:
* 1960 - 2007 Philadelphia
* 1960 - 2007 Denver
* 1968 - 1970 San Francisco

Dimes:
* 1965 - 2007 Philadelphia
* 1968 - 2007 Denver

Quarters:
* 1965 - 2007 Philadelphia
* 1968 - 2007 Denver

Half Dollars:
* 1971 - 1974, 1976 - 1986, 1988 - 2001 Philadelphia (except 1976 silver since the red book claims they were minted)
* 1971 - 1974, 1976 - 2001 Denver (except 1987)

Dollars:
* 1980, 2000 - 2001 Philadelphia (I would list 1979 as well, but I am not which is more common narrow or wide rim)
* 1979 - 1980, 2000 - 2001 Denver

In addition, if a coin type that is was listed above is found, report it. Although I don't expect many/any other coins to be found in circulation, it is still possible.

Happy Hunting in 2007.

Hi GMAN, I think your idea of a tracking list is awesome.
I think it would be a good idea if we kept the list of 2006's best finds in our find chart just to keep track of Treasurenet's all time oldest finds since 2006 the coin roll hunting forum topic started. I would like to assist you in a few changes in the canadian chart if you dont mind. I am from Canada and i know quite a bit about Canadian coins and a lot about American ones also.
For the one Dollar coins and two dollar coins from Canada there are no P variation varieties.
As for the Canadian quarters in 1992 there were the commemoration of the 13 provinces and territories put out for circulation.
They are:
British Columbia
Ontario
Nunavut
Northwest Territories
Quebec
Saskachewan
Manitoba
Prince Edward Island
Newfoundland
New Brunswick
Nova Scotia
Yukon
Alberta
In 1999
There were 12 coins in commemoration for the 12 monthes of the year.
In 2000
There were 12 coins in commemoration of the new millenium
I'll give you there names later.
In 2001 the was a P variety
in 2004 there were the poppy quarter with a red colored center, The Jean Cabot commemorative 1604 to 2004 and the 2004 P but there was no normal variety without a P
In 2005 there was the 2005 Year of the Veterans quarter the sakatchewan quarter and British Columbia quartera and the 2005 P variety but no 2005 no P
2006 Breast Cancer quarter with a pink center, 2006 bravery quarter, 2006 P, 2006 mint logo and there were no variety of the 2006 no P
Dimes:
In 2000 there is P variety and the same thing in 1999.
In 2001 there was the year of volunteers commemorative
In 2006 there is also the mint mark type
In 2004, 2005 and 2006 their is no, no P types.
Nickels:
In 2004, 2005 and 2006 their is no, no P types.
In 2005 there was the victory nickel 1945 to 2005
2006 mint mark type
Pennies:
1999 P and 2000 P
2006 mint mark type
Im glad i can help contribute to such an interesting chart of finds.
Since i live in Canada and not the USA can i still participate in this if I post my only my pre 1960 Canadian finds and my old American finds. Also i would like to know if could post my world coin finds other then Canada and the Us. I live near the border of our two countries so i frequently
find many American coins.
If I have permission to participate in this it would greatly appreciated.

You can definitely participate on the US coins as it is stated they can be found anywhere as long as they are circulating.
I also think I figured out a way for anyone from Canada to participate in the canadian coin list. When listing any Canadian coins, just note that they were found in Canada and if they haven't already been crossed off in Red, I will cross them off in Blue instead. And if a Canadian coin is later found in the US, it will be changed to red. The percentage found will list those found from either country.

Note that I was listing all coins minted including those issued only in proof sets for US coins and would do the same for Canadian if I was sure I had the correct list. To help me interpret your list, can you just type up a list in the same format as the tracking list so I can just copy and paste into the tracking list, it would be much easier than descirbing it (at least for me).

It would appear below the date for that vintage penny. When missing, it means it was minted in Philadelphia. Otherwise a "D" for Denver or "S" for San Francisco would be present.

I am assuming the 1945-S merc is not of the microscopic S variety. If it is let me know and I will change which one is crossed off.

New items for 2007 Tracking List - Updated 01-19-2007 at 10:04 Eastern Time

Hi All,

2-1939, 4-1940, 2-1941, 1-1941-D, 1-1943-D (Silver), 1-1945-P (Silver), 3-1948, 4- 1948-D, 1-1952,
2-1953-S, 3-1954-D, 1-1957, 2-1957-D, 3-1958-D, 2-1959, 3-1959-D, 1-1960,4-1960-D 4-1968-S, 2-1969S and 7-1970S.

Also found about 6 dollars of the 1964/D coin which seems like they were mass produced during that timeframe.

GMan,

You can take the 62 Franklin dime off your list. Found it in the dime box that I just searched. Box only produced three keepers, now have the 62, 63 & 64. Also was given an extra roll of dimes and a 1961 & 1971 Canadian dimes and a Romania 2005, 5 Bani coin. The Bani is the same size as our dimes and we'll probably start seeing them show up in our dime rolls.

Visited Wells Fargo today and the newbie teller had a British five pence (2002) sitting on his coin tray above the dimes so he gave it to me for 10¢. Then when I was cashing my nickels at the casino I found a bunch of dimes and pennies in the reject slot. Among them was a 2000 Canadian dime, one more to go [red]red[/red]!
