Had luggage lost on one trip and one suit case destroyed on another
will never put mine in regular luggage - I always carry on

always carry the electronics cause I don't trust the baggage handlers. Shafts and diggers must go in luggage. You do not need to take it out.

I would hand carry the control unit and anything hard wired to it. The rest...batteries, shaft and scoop put in checked bags. Always check with the airline you've booked with though for questions. They are subject to steep fines by TSA and FAA if they are found to allow someone to fly that is not in compliance with CURRENT regulations, so they are up on ALL the rules because they are in business to make money not give it away.

THE REST OF MY PACKED GEAR FOR TRAVEL
I usually take
2 - scoops - large breakdown model - medium breakdown model or a hand scoop
2 - masks w/snorkels
2 pair dive boots
gloves
2 - mesh bags
spare lower rods
extra batteries (some countries charge a fortune for batteries- triple what they cost here)
repair/equipment pouch - zipties, ducktape, spare washers, plastic screws/ bolts, dive knife
screw drivers, even a small hammer
wet suit or wet jacket if needed
usually will put spare towels under and on top to stop excessive rattle
