now that i've finished building the treasure chest, comes the hard part, trying to fill it up

Nice!!! You spent some time putting it together

Very nice work! You could put a movable false bottom in it, so it always looks full, as you add treasure to it.

Excellent job, I too have been looking to make one for myself for the longest time..

I was thinking of copying this one.. but then thought that I may wanna build a coffee table style one too.

This one is very kewl and piratey looking, but depending on your home decor.....maybe a coffee table one would suit better.

That's the idea! I can't wait to figure out something for myself, though that is a back burner idea for now, as just getting going with first detector is primary. So much fun to be had with this hobby....from actually going hunting, to planning your own personal treasure chest and relic display boxes. So......tell us a little bit about how you picked that design, chose the wood , stain and so forth.

Joy, this test piece is made from poplar. For the finish I first changed the color of poplar with vinegar and iron then I put on a gel stain, then satin poly. I wanted it to look primitive like a pirate might have so I added the square cut nails to make it look like they are holding it together. All the nails and iron are either oil blackened or finished with gun blue

Awesome job! I am a retired finish carpenter and never even thought of building one of these! Great Idea!I had a thought, I don't know how crazy you want to get with these but there are lot's of places online you can find old reclaimed wood and authentic cut nails to get that really aged look from it! You might even find some reclaimed shipwreck wood! That would be really cool! Either way beautiful work from one craftsman to another!

That's some real nice wood work...jjg........................MT, I like yours also..like all the detail....I have had one for years, mine is small 12 L x 6.5 W x 6 inchs tall, it will take a few years to fill those big one's.....And they will be Heavy

If I built it and hide something in it for red, It would always be where it could be seen!!!
