Relic Hunting
A buddy and I got out for a little while this morning to a spot we've hunted a few times. I've found a lot of neat relics including a 1914 vehicle license and a silver geography medal from the 1840s. There is SOOO much at this place so I decided to hunt in coin mode. I probably eyeballed 30 pull tabs! After about a half hour my buddy Craig comes up to me with his machine off and says that there's just too much junk. We had both dug a ton of pull tabs and screw caps, so I was ready to go too. As I am standing there talking to him, I get a nice solid high tone. I dig it out and immediately knew it was some type of key. I was thinking it was a padlock key. I wiped off the dirt and saw the words "GALT HOUSE" come out! The Galt House Hotel is a very famous hotel that had a lot of generals stay there during the Civil War. In fact, one general was murdered by another general there over a dispute regarding the treatment of a superior officer. I'm guessing this key is from the 1870s or 1880s. Anyway, that key got us both fired up again, so we continued hunting. A short time later I eyeballed another key sticking out from the base of a tree. It ended up being a Model T Ford key! This is my first one in over 20 years of metal detecting. My next find was the Cadillac key, which I'm guessing is from the 1960s or so. The wind started picking up and we were both tired of digging junk, so we decided to call it a day. Craig did not find anything worth keeping. We're hoping to head to a nearby spot this week that might be a Civil War camp. Wish us luck! Thanks for looking and HH!
