Trivia As a Topic---Tumbleweed's Origin

Thought that Tumbleweed was native to the west and southwest United States.

Gene Autry, Tom Mix and other western hero's...

Nope, it came from Russia.

Brought to the U.S. by German immigrants from the Volga...they imported Red Wheat seed that contained Russian Thistle, aka, Tumbleweed.

Brought in prior to the Dust Bowl farming fiasco...around early 1900's.

What other trivia can you add to the mix?

Just a comment on the tumbleweed. My sister's inlaws went out west back in the 1960's and being the cool people that they were and knowing that I was fascinated by things out of the ordinary, brought me back a huge dried tumbleweed. I thought it was one of the coolest things that I'd ever seen. It was very hard, when the outer stems were plucked it resonated. I just thought it was cool. They said the big downside to it is that if you run over it in your car it can bust your tires and punch holes in hoses and such.

I had a big one jump out in front of my truck one day traveling in Texas, when I lived in Lubbock. The base of this beast was probably 6 inches across. It knocked the bug deflector off the front of my hood, knocked my driver's side mirror off, and cracked my windshield. >:(

Have not had that bad a luck, however, when tumbling with the wind, they can scratch the hell out your car's paint (and chrome)...spiny boogers.

No, they won't puncture your car's tire's. However, they will do a number on bicycle tires >:( >:(. Also, you can take 3 dried ones, (Huge, small and smaller) tie them in order, spray them with artificial snow and make one heck of a snowman for the kids.

Re: Trivia As a Topic---Tumbleweed's Origin

Take a Tumble Weed about 3ft around.

Tie a rope and Rock to the base.

Tie a peace of Jack Rabbit or chicken to the center.

Drop in irrigation canal for about 30 minutes.

Rapidly Pull the Beast out of the water.

It will be full of Yummy Crawdads.

Old Drunk Indian Secret! ::)
