The letters are "EAC." It's a uniform button from the Episcopal Academy of Cheshire, located in Cheshire, Connecticut.
1794 is a commemorative date, marking the founding of the school.
The button itself reportedly dates from around 1865.
A few of these appeared in a recent buttons price list at $20-22.
Found this on another post on treasurenet here. The button is identical. The post title is Old 1700's house produces military button with 1794 on it..........

It's a uniform button from the Episcopal Academy of Cheshire. (EAC) That Academy is located in Cheshire, Connecticut, and the date of 1794 is when the school was founded. The actual button probably dates around 1860s.

Really neat find, Breezie

I think it's pretty cool to see two ID-helpers were typing replies with the correct ID at the same time. It shows the high quality of the ID-team we've got in the What-Is-It forum.

Now Im just curious on how all these different buttons made it to my property here in SC. I've found buttons from the war of 1812, civil war both north and south and now this one.

Stan, I too am always amazed how 'stuff' gets from point A to point B. I think my most confusing item was a 1500's Spectacle buckle I dug here in NC, 3+ hours from the coast! The funniest 2 items I ever found together in basically the same hole/same depth was a CW 3 ring minie bullet and a 1940s/50s lipstick tube! I dug the bullet first, then I saw GOLD down in the hole, and I thought I'd found a really neat brass or gilt Civil War item, and when I pulled out that lipstick, I said . . .well, I won't say what I said since it is Easter Sunday, but they were not kind words! :) Breezie

Yes sir I did that yesterday. I found that button a musket ball, a 22 shell and a picture frame hook in the same hole. This property has been occupied by my family since 1750 and I had no idea there was so much metal in the ground here.
