Spent some time digging a late colonial site in Brunswick Cty, NC this weekend and found a first for me - a tudor rose button. It is in really nice condition with the shank intact. Measures about 11 mm across. Not sure if it has any connection to the military but I'm pretty excited to have dug it. The second button is a thick cast pewter button about 17 mm across. I can't quite make out the design on the front and it might just be a something decorative or could it be another tudor rose? Any ideas on either of these?

Alexander, I’m not an expert by any means but my concentration is on colonial sites. The majority of the sites that I hunt are from between the mid 1600s and very late 1700s. I have found several octagonal links from mid to late 18th century sites. This pewter octagonal link with the Tudor rose design was found at a mill site that one of my ancestors owned with his partner. I later found the matching link that was in worse condition. My personal feeling on the Tudor rose design is that it was just a very popular design during the latter half of the 18th century. Lots of people like to designate every Tudor designed item as possibly having a military association. My guess is that 98% of them have zero to do with the military at all. Crusader or Iron Patch can speak more on this subject as they have much more experience on the subject.
This aside your links are a gorgeous set and these are one of my favorite relics to see in the dirt. I’m really hoping to find a silver set one day with the Tudor design. This is one of the set that I found at the mill site. This site was here from about 1750 to maybe 1770 or so.
