Union breast plate

I found a Union breast plate this past weekend and it's REALLY toasty. The lead on the back is flakey and the front brass almost seems burnt. Should I use olive oil on it? I've seen some things that say it would keep it from drying out and flaking and some say water and soft toothbrush and leave it alone. Any help would be appreciated.

A picture would help. Soap, water, and a soft brush will work if you think it's stable enough for that. Don't soak it in olive oil. After cleaning you could use a little on the brass. Lightly with a toothpick. Congratulations and good luck.
