My thought was maybe the coin didn't strike correctly so the mint x marked it to be destroyed. I don't know much about mint errors so its a mystery to me.

No, it appears to have been done after the coin was heavily circulated. The mint does deface dies after they are done with them, but not coins.

The mint never does this. It waffles mistrike coins in recent years, but never cut an x into them. Cancelled dies of this era would have an x cut into them, but the coins would have a RAISED x on them. Perhaps someone was trying to make change of less than one cent. We shall never know.

Is it copper? I may be wrong but I believe it is a Classic Head Large Cent (1808 - 1814). Agree that it is post mint damage.
