Unusual Jacksonian period Navy button.jpg

Found this yesterday
I thought it was a regular flat button and I nearly died when I was cleaning the back and the eagle appeared

a lot of different opinions on this, was it a mistake, or a re civillian use of rejected Navy buttons

I found a reference on Robert Silverstein Navy button page, and he confirmed it was a small trend at this time and was a Navy officers issue

"yes this is normal and it was issue for naval officers I believe around the Jackson administration when it was common to b back insignia Buttons"
Robert Silverstein

It's my understanding that they used up spare shock & this was a Civilian plain fronted button.
