Unusual Kennedy Half

I've never seen anything like this but suspect it was minted as a commemorative of some sort. There is no traditional copper banding, just what you see here. Note the recent scuffs exposing the copper core. I've done a limited google search for this thing with no results. Anybody ever seen something like this? I acquired it from a nearby cash register lady who didn't mind swapping two quarters for it. (Feel free to resize if photos are too large)

Wonder if it was set in a bezel and doctored by a jeweler of something?

It looks like it was in a ring with little pinch braces. My guess is that it was in a pendant until someone was too broke to keep it. They snapped it out of the holder and spent it on cat food or cigarettes. I'm betting the black marks are silver tarnish; not from the coin, but from the holder. Or possibly the coin was plated and the plating reacted with the holder.
In any case, you didn't lose a cent and came up with a conversation piece on Tnet.
