UPDATE 1799 Cent 1917Walker,KGII,IHs, 38&44LCs,642cnt 1804 1/2cnt!

Well after hitting that 1838 LC two days ago, I went back yesterday....at 3" ..bam....out pops a copper, I could make out what type it was, but could not see the year until today when I carefull began to clean it up. I have not done the reverse yet, that is going to take some time. 1799 Draped Bust Cent...not sure of the variety yet, hopefully this pic gives a better ID.

Today I went back, nothing but a zincoln for over an hour. Managed to yank a silver topless thimble which kind of got me going. Then I notice something a little distance away, a bottle hunters worst nightmare! 98% of everything broken! I put down the detector for a bit and started rummaging through the broken glass. I managed to save a few, some very interesting ones I kept anyway that were broken but had nice embossments on them...like the pin worm syrup. Most are small medicine bottles, all the big cool ones were done. I saw dates on a few the were 1840's, 1860's and the one that really got me down deep was a George Washington flask shattered, but two big pieces remained that I took a pic of with my cell phone...(will post pics sometime tomorrow).

I was about to call it quits but went back to the detector for just a little more, I picked a random spot and within a couple of swings out pops a ring from 2", Looked like a class ring, but not school info on it, the stone is also missing, looks antique. In that same swing, I had a quarter reading at 0", figuring it was a clad quarter, I stuck my digger under it and popped it out....Pow! 1917 Walking Liberty Half ( will post pic of the hole tomorrow as well) Kept going for a little while longer to pull out that Eagle Button with a Ridabock & Co. NY backmark (it has 19 stars around it, 2 piece and quite fat - any Albert's Book owner's help me ID please!)

Finally I get a good high reading at 6"....i dig.....i dig some more......signal still there, hmm it's deep, signal still good, not iron.....i dig some more...thoughts of a mason jar filled with coins races through my head, i dig....still not there yet..I'm well over a foot down..i dig more...pinpointer now telling me i'm close...i dig more...im there...............is it the mason jar? is it filled with coins?!!

No its a friggin brand new Sprite Soda Can......I can't figure that one out :icon_scratch:...Walker at 0" just a few feet away, now a brand new soda can over a foot down....dissapointing...especially spending so much time digging that one carefully...

I wish it was just this stuff I dug, but the trash to treasure ratio here is 200:1, so much crap...

Hopefully I get back tomorrow..this spot will be extinct really soon.

I just nominated you for banner for the 1799 cent. I would send that to NCS to get it conserved properly and authenticated. Mintage is unknown as it was lumped together in the report with the 1798, but the rarity and value tell you there are very few...

My family datecting team, The Three Datectateers, seem to find a lot of Draped Bust coppas. In just two weeks, my uncle excavated three.

That 1799 is a beauty, buddy! I am sure that you are suuuper proud of it!

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

I was discussing with SJ Don yesterday what to do with it. I had to gentley clean it up some with wet Q-tips to find out which variety it is and get a positive ID on the year.

Hopefully someone can tell me a bit more, on rarity, what condition you think it is, etc?. I have seen it in my old RedBook and online at http://www.coinfacts.com/large_cent...799_large_cents/1799_large_cent_varieties.htm

I am still unsure of its value, the reverse needs some work, lots of caked dirt. I began to gentley wet q-tip it, but stopped.

Yes Zoy, I am still lit up over this find! :tongue3: I am wondering ....how does one come down from this....what happens when I go to someother location and pull nothing but clad?!

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

I tried to post lastnight but the site was goofy an wouldn't let me, I too went to the redbook an was comparing your coin with the photos they have of the 2 varities an in my unexpert opinion I'm pretty sure you have the 9OVER8 varity.. which is the more valueable one...

value in 2009 redbook is
AG-3 $1500
G-4 $3,000
VG-8 $5,500
F-12 $12,000

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

Don't go by published prices on your 1799 cent. These are worth thousands of dollars even in totally nasty condition. For example, check out the AG3 1799/8 just sold by Shawn Yancey (an early copper specialist) on his website. Sale price was $4,500 (though his example was choice and non-corroded). That is three times the Red Book price in AG3. You will find similar results on other dealers' websites, and the Heritage auction archives will confirm the high prices realized for this rarity. Yours has a readable date, and despite the corrosion, you are looking at a major score. This needs to go to NCS or ANACS for authentication, but it's one heck of a find.

For Rarity, quality of the coin, that is a BANNER find. Forget Redbook prices when figuring out value, none of those prices work for ground found coppers, they always knock off for the environmental damage. With that said, there have been plenty of 1799 Enviornmental Damaged coppers sold on the auction sites and by joining for free the Heritage Auction site you can see the live auction and the archives. The archives are a good indicator of how ground found coppers, similar to yours have done recently. I might add, quite well, so it is a money coin!
This find is right behind finding a Chain Cent and value sometimes not that far behind, again, this is a super find.

Without seeing the reverse, I still think it is the Sheldon 189 variety, "Normal Date" type.

Even though I am positive you found the coin in a situation that would make it most improbable, I must mention that on one website I found said the 1799 was the most counterfeited of all U.S. coins, which I found surprising.

Again, congrats on a RARE find.

What a find! WTG!

Please post again when the results come in.

I don't have that many large coppers yet but I'm getting so addicted to them that I'm starting to have noticably less enthusiasm about detecting sites that have little chance of finding one.

I would like to add to Don's post an say that Heritage will do free appraisals if you sign up for their site... I also would like to ask Don or anyone else who may know he answer..since they claim the 1799 was the most counterfeited of all U.S. coins.. Would this coin still be worth thousands?? or be worthless if found to be counterfeit?

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

Counterfeit!! I really hope not! When you say they were highly counterfeited, does that mean back then or now? If it was back then the possibility is there, if they are doing it in present day, there is no way it is bogus.

I'd like to send it to whoever I have to, to get it checked out!

After reading Don's post about jfx55's chain cent, it looks like it can be quite pricey! I really don't have any intention of selling it, but would really like it ID'd, cleaned, and slabbed.

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

I would think if a counterfeit, which I am 99.9999% sure it is not, that it would be basically worthless, since that would be a counterfeit made to deceive for collector value of a US coin and not for using in the period as real cash, I just don't see any great value in such a thing. It was not Heritage that made that statement, I found that on a Large Cent Collector's site.

This one: http://www.largecents.net/collection/1799drbust.html

I interept that counterfeit statement to mean they made them later and not at the era they were in use, once coin collecting became bigger, than counterfeiting to deceive collectors became an issue. I would not worry about yours being a counterfeit. If it was not dirty and found at a flea market, than that would be a different story! :)
