(Bloomberg) -- The US Energy Department declared a power emergency in Texas, citing a shortage of electricity as an Arctic winter blast causes power plants to fail.

The order allows the state’s grid operator to exceed certain air pollution limits to boost generation amid record power demand in the state. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, whose service area includes 90% of electric customers in Texas, requested the emergency order Friday, warning it may need to resort to blackouts.



“While the vast majority of generating units in the ERCOT region continue to operate without any problem, a small number of units have experienced operating difficulties due to cold weather or gas curtailments,” the Energy Department said in its order.



The order said 11,000 megawatts of coal and gas-fired power, 4,000 megawatts of wind and 1,700 megawatts of solar power were out or derated to weather conditions.

It will be difficult to bite back......lol. To start with one will have to swim / read through the thousand plus pages of the emissions reduction act papers that just Texas alone has.

In a nut shell any energy use that effects the emissions out put will be effected. This will likely effect any energy use for mining as well.
Others can spend the time swimming through the thousand pages plus for a fun use of there time for starters.

Prospecting is not as energy evolved as most mining activities are.

Since this has been going on for about the last 2 years with Texas. There will likely be a lot of power pulled from other near by States effecting them as well. This may be what we will start seeing a lot more now as this grows effecting a larger area of the grid. In time this will effect more of mining activities.

However the State of Texas had this problem for more then 2 years now and it is not getting any better as of this post. This will not have a good effect on the grid in general. Parts of California may be following next etc.

The U.S. Department of Energy granted permission for power plants to release more pollution than is normally allowed — if grid conditions worsen.

“ERCOT does not lightly request this authorization,” ERCOT President and Chief Executive Officer Pablo Vegas wrote to Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. “It understands the importance of the environmental permit limits that are at issue. However, in ERCOT’s judgment, the loss of power to homes and local businesses in the areas that may be affected by curtailments presents a far greater risk to public health and safety than the temporary exceedances of those permit limits that would be allowed under the requested order.”



Most of the power generators that were down or scaled back Friday were expected to be online again within 24 hours, according to ERCOT. But if they did not return, or if there were additional power production outages, the grid operators warned that they might need to find other ways to limit power usage, including requesting Texans conserve power during frigid temperatures as many are celebrating Christmas.

But because you're looking at a space, in terms of acreage across the country, that's so large, it's extremely challenging to monitor and protect. And many of these places are very remote, and so officers have to get there. And by the time they do, the attackers are already gone.

Burglaries to 3 power substations cause Power Outages in Puyallup and Graham this morning. All 3 substations were vandalized by the burglars. No suspects in custody at this time.



Today at 05:26 am we received a call of a burglary to the Tacoma Public Utilities Substation at 22312 46th Ave E.



Deputies arrived on scene and saw there was forced entry into the fenced area. Nothing had been taken from the substation, but the suspect vandalized the equipment causing a power outage in the area.

New York Communities for Change posted a tongue-and-cheek missing poster in response to a city tweet earlier this week showing city leaders — sans Adams — briefing the press about the weather.

“Have you seen this man? Retweet to help us find our city’s Mayor! WheresEric #MissingMayor,” the nonprofit wrote above a “Missing Mayor” flyer which also included Adams’ height, age and weight.

This is the 4th incident at a Power Substation in South Pierce County on Christmas Day. All law enforcement agencies in the county have been notified of the incidents and will be monitoring power substations in their area.

At this time power has been restored to most of the affected homes.

Anyone who sees someone or something suspicious near a power facility is urged to call 911 and report it right away.
