That is a strong possibility, a butt plate for a rifle! I'm eager to hear from that someone who knows. Found it today in the Colorado prairie.

Although I have not seen one of those before, I tend to agree with goldencoin. Before I read his reply I was thinking it may be some type of box plate which was a very common thing on rifle boxes, cartridge boxes, etc.. Its shape tends to lead me away from any uniform badge.
