usgs historic topo maps

when I go to usgs historic topo maps I can't get them to open...what program do they run in?

They are GeoPDF format.

You will need a PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader. The current free version of Acrobat is complete junk in my opinion so I would suggest choosing from one of the PDF readers in this review.

I think the days of decent fast pdf readers are over, and I'd like to know why.

I use Foxit, but I'm not in love with it.

Agree - Adobe is complete junk, and it tries to download spyware as well. Imagine if you paid $1000 a seat for it ..................
