61 head stamps strung out in a 6ft line about 5 inches deep....about 20 stamps in i need to give the knees a break. so i stand up to swing a little and 3 inches to the left of the head stamp trench...right where i was kneeling, i get a real clean 51! same depth as the headstamps....i was in shock when i saw the silouette outline and a few stars.....my first v-nickel and my oldest coin to date. its in really bad shape but I'm pumped! if you look close you can see the top of the 2nd number and a little of the third number.....im guessing 188?.....On the way back to the car i found this 1961 buick la saber vin plate somebody did not want! What are you going to do with those brass shotgun ends? Great nickel! I'm wanting to find ANY coin dating pre 1900

Nice nickel...

Found my 1st V nickel last week...didn,t know what it was...looked at it yesterday ...I could see the stars around the coin and knew wasn,t made of silver. But could make out enough to look it up in my new books.

Cool finds !

Those V nickels are great to find but they seem to wear very badly in the ground. I have three buddies that I hunt with and we have all found V nickels at different times. All of ours were toasted except one. One of my buddies found one that was about eight or nine inches deep. This coin looked like it just came off the mint! He found a jar lid above it and some glass in the hole as well. Don't know if the lid protected it or if it was in the jar at one time. One of my buddies thought maybe because it was so deep it was preserved well. Either way great find of an old coin!

Key dates on the V nickel are 1885 and 1886 (1912 S). Even in that shape, may be worth $100 if it is key.

Glad you could get out! Q: why are brass shotgun ends - called head stamps??

Cool finds.

my guess would be if you stand the shell up to read the info......the end with the stamped information becomes the top or the "head" of the shell.
