Hi, I'm from Salinas, CA (south of San Jose). Down here, we find "phoenix buttons" at sites that date from the 1820s/30s. The buttons are 1820s french military in origin, that made their way into the trading circuit to pacific coastal sites of the period.

I have heard that many have/were found along the Columbia river area, specifically from Portland to Dalles area. Does anyone here know of anyone who's found any of these buttons up your way? Thanx!

here's some pix of what they look like. It's a two page article, so when you get to the bottom, be sure to click on "next page". I mentored this fellow, when he used to live in CA, and he found several phoenix buttons at sites I took him too. He's currently in Colorado.
