VERY RARE EARLY CONNECTICUT ONE PIECE MILITARY BUTTON EAGLE,SHIELD & STARS

got out today & went back to one of my very 1st cellar holes.worked it slower and dug everything.aside from the few flat buttons I thought my finds of the day were the key & small buckle until i started cleaning the buttons.
the last button i was cleaning with just water running over it I saw a shield :o
what a shock when this design emerged after cleaning.
backmark is TREBLE GILT with the Connecticut seal in the shield.
Leddel says it's most likely War of 1812 ish.any other thoughts from you guys?

This is probably the finest dug example known. It is a button I have not seen before, and is very Very rare. Demand does not do this one justice in terms of value. But I am voting banner just the same.

Best Wishes and a BIG Congratulations,

Buck

Great button Dave!

From the Tice book:

MILITIA STATE ARMS & OTHER GENERAL USE BUTTONS

CT050 {Albert's CT 11}
Connecticut Militia; flat, one piece.
The author knows of only two examples of this rare button.
Leavenworth, Hayden and Scovill produced these rare buttons around 1820.
A. The device shows three grape vines on a shield surrounded bu an eagle with spread wings. Fourteen five-pointed stars surround the central
device on a plain field, 22 mm.

I don't see your backmark listed in the Tice book. It lists the following:

1. Blank
2. "L H & SCOVILL" dm. Probably an overstruck backmark on a civilian button

Congrats on the banner!

Based on the description I would think that the fact that some of these were overstruck on civilian buttons there may be a few different varieties floating around. The fact that your's is not listed may mean it is a previously unknown variety, at least at the time Tice first published his book in 1997.
