I wonder why it was made of lead? Just trying to think of different
things that would have used cast lead decorations. :icon_scratch:

It's not easily plated, not a high quality metal, possibly made for something utilitarian?
Could it have been decoration from the front or side of a chest,
maybe it held a ring in it's mouth and was a drawer pull? :icon_scratch:

Very cool find though! :icon_thumright:

Thanks for all you replies!
Antiquarian & Bev, as to its use, it must have been purely decorative, the attachment hardware is 2 brass nails, smaller than a pencil lead, part of the top one is still there.
this would lead me to believe it wasn't used as a handle.
as Antiquarian theorized, probably from a Chest, box, or furniture item.
(maybe on the corners of a mirror?)
Composition is lead or lead alloy, easily scratched with copper, and quite heavy.
HH to all!

Yes, I was surprised & quite pleased.
Have dug many items like this,
little items of workmanship with a bit of mystery,
Have some of my finds posted in my pictures folder on this site.
Working on getting them all in there!
2 that come to mind are a small pewter anchor, and a little 'Mannekin Pis' style statue, also lead, that may interest you
as they are kind of similar to this, not coins, jewelery or buttons, Just 'stuff'
Good day to you
