Virgin Mary metal

I found this in a corn field next to a cellar whole. It has a nice little prayer on the side with the virgin Mary on it and in small numbers on the bottom has the date 1830. Its the second religious item i have found this year so I'm very happy with it and think the condition is very good as well considering the date.

I think I found the same medal, it's the Medal of the Immaculate Conception. Is it pretty large (couple of inches long) and heavy?

I found mine at a late 1800's site, and I don't think their any older then 1880's.

Brian thank you for the link it is very intersting to read about the history of the medal. Sounds as though it is a fairly commen find, I think I might start to wear it and see if what they clam is true thanks again and happy hunting

its commonly called a "miraculous" medal * of the virgin mary . the date of 1830 was when the vision of the holy mother appeared to the nun and said for devoted catholics to carry a medal made like this.
