1652 XII Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling

I went to a hunt in Virginia and found this. There is supposed to be a tree (oak, willow or pine) on the back but its completely worn off.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to figure out what it is?
Thanks
Jon

You should post a clear shot of the other side. Even slight details can matter when making an ID.

Wow...I'd say based on what you said it was in circulation for a very long time but in any event I would be beaming if I found that!:occasion14:

I'm 98% sure you have an Oak Tree Shilling NOE 9. Some pretty decent indicators on these. The large space between the T and H. The one thick line in the X. A few others as well. This particular variety was often clipped at the mint to discard some weight. This is a URS 7 33-64 known. Great find with a very odd wear pattern.

That baby was "well loved". But Mass silver is always an incredible find and they don't often show up in Va. out of all the old silvers Bill D has dug he's never put his coil over a Mass silver. But the Lord B makes up for it....then some

Thank you very much for this information. What should I do with this- Is it worth the cost to have it graded and put into a protector or is just the cardboard holder sufficient,
Thanks for your time

Jon I would not have it graded and slabbed. All of the labels will be negative and there's a good chance they won't even label the variety correctly. SilverTreeChaser on here had a terrible experience with a beautiful tree coin he sent out. I found this one last year and have not had it slabbed yet. I put it in a safe place and protected it. I figure if I decide to at some point I can.

You made an incredible find that very few will ever find. Put that feather in your cap and cherish that amazing piece of colonial silver. It's truly a very special find

Wow, that is in great condition compared to mine. I'll have my son put it into a coin holder and he can add to his collection.
Just curious what guess would it grade and value? He likes to put the coins I find into a separate book, he puts the grade (what he thinks it is) and a value on each one,

Beautiful coin! Probably no real need to get it slabbed but get a nice holder for it. If you ever sell it slabbing might not be a bad idea. Thats a coin most of us want but will never find. Congrats!
