There were Spanish trail markers found in Kentucky. And almost all states had some kind of Civil war activity. What area are you in?
I would be glad to give you some Idea's.

The Spanish founded St. Augustine, Florida. Juan Ponce de Leon explored the area. It only stands to reason that they would have spread out from there.
