A plastic baggie over the controls will protect you from the rain. If you drop it or fall down, the detector has to be repaired. The Vaquero will not be able to detect well in wet saltwater sand or in the surf unless you turn down the sensitivity quite a bit. If it's then stable, consider yourself lucky.

Good Luck.

Thanks Sandman i figured a baggie would do it ,i think the only water for a while will be shallow fresh until i get to Florida this winter, if i get the hang of this i might spring for a Tiger Shark. Your posts are very welcome and informative. thank you.

Be careful Ron, one slip and it is in the water and your up the creek.

If your in the central Florida area this winter and want company on a hunt, send me a PM. I hunt the beaches as often as possible......

definitely keep it out of the water. Like was already mentioned, a baggie will protect it from the rain, but not a drop in the water. Also, be careful of lifting the coil above the control box. Very often if you do so, the water can run right up (or down, depending on your perspective) the shaft and into the control box, frying everything.
