Etrac if you dont mind a heavy machine and bad screen in direct sunlight. The Nox series is a nice light multi functional detector in your price range. If you want simplicity, I really like my F75.

Detector(s) used
Minelab Vanquish 340, Tesoro Silver uMax, Compadre, and BH Tracker IV.

Ex: White's Spectrum XLT, Tesoro Cutlass II Umax, and that circa late 70's red handled junk from RadioShack that started it.
If not going underwater a Fisher F44 will do nicely. The money saved can go to an accessory coil (Fisher/Nel), a Fisher F-pulse pinpointer, and some energy bars.

Since you're not a newbie, you'd be bored with anything less than a Legend.

All Good options mentioned above. I personally can't recommend the F44 because it has the same buttons as my old F22 and I went through 2 of those units before I gave up dealing with it. Maybe they have improved that manufacturing issue by now.

The best bang for you buck new is going to be the Legend.

If your ok with a used machine you can find great deals now on F75, Etracs, and Deus 1 machines. In fact I will probably be posting a Minelab E-trac tonight for sale as I have too many machines and just haven't had the time to get out with that one as much as I thought I would.
