Well..this is a first for me. Tax Seal with "Coat of Arms"

I do a lot of searching in the shallow (rocky) waters of Lake Michigan / Lake Huron and have founds a lot of interesting items. I had a day off of work and decided that I was going to put a full 8-hour day with detector in hand...much to my wife's displeasure of course :)

I was in the water as the sun started to rise and, after an hour, had a handful of items extracted (sinkers, brass doorknob assembly, fishing lure and a silver Canadian dime). The rocks in this part of the lake were fairly jagged and can be difficult to remove - as they are typically solidified in place by smaller rocks/sand. When I received another mid-tone my mind immediately thought "large lead sinker"...determined to dig up everthing with a significant tone I started the dig.

I will not bore you with the details but the effort to get this thing out of the rocks was not easy. When I lifted it from the water I instantly knew that it was not a sinker...but had zero idea on what it could be. It was covered in a thick clay/mud coating and I gently washed it away to reveal some of it's detail...

My sincerest thanks to the "What is it" forum of this site for providing their expertise. I am not certain what I will need to dig up to top this one.

That's a great find. I believe I have seen one of these dug from a trade site, so your location is sort of interesting.

That is cool! Any possibility that these could be a clock pendulum?

I think its later than Colonial. I would say in the rein of Victoria, due to the Crown Type - Very Nice Find.

Very nice relic find! Crusader brought up a good point about the style of the Crown. Years ago there was discussion on Crown styles being used to date the era of a find and I used to have a chart showing the different crowns, which could be used to help date your find. I would imagine the chart is still on the Internet somewhere, I lost mine on one of my old computer crashes........... After reading the link that Bramblefind posted on his What is it post, there seems to be an identical one in the article, but not sure of what the author is dating it to. I assume the 1800 era, not 1700s...

My first impression on seeing this is also not a Colonial-era seal, but early (to mid?) Victorian based on overall design. Great find nontheless! It'll display well

I have had this thing sitting in a box since finding. ...is there anything that I should put on it to protect it? I am not all that familiar with 'lead' preservation

Makes sense...since finding this I have found mainly 'War of 1812' artifacts...and trade silver.
