Well the break is fresh so the stone could very well be in the hole still.

I actually broke that side of the ring trying to straiten it up. I think whatever was in it was gone for long time. But I'm going back tomorrow and look in the hole again just in case

My guess is that it had a piece of black onyx in it. But of course that is a guess. Nice piece of gold.
