Went out to a fur trappers site on an island in a local river. I found a jesuit ring that dates from the 1600s that was handed out to the local Indian

Adventured out to some islands at a fur trapper's site. Felt like I was walking in the foot steps of the trappers and indians.
Found a Jesuit ring that dates from around the 1630s. and represents the protection of Mary ! Found a copper tinkle cone ( worn on native American dresses), also got a Native American copper hair slide bead. Jean Nicolet went exploring the area in 1630

Nice find. That's a Mater Misericordia (Mother of Mercy) ring. It's two Ms one upside down superimposed over one another. The ring is upside down in your pictures, the heart goes on the bottom and the three rays go on the top of the design.

It's commonly called a Jesuit ring but the source of the rings are unknown beyond the fact they were French trade items - the religious symbolism on some of them were common for the time. Not all were religious.

Mater Misericordia is not exclusive to Jesuits or any other Catholic sect. It's possible but unlikely this ring was handed out by Jesuits, accounts from the time mostly attribute them as trade items used by French trappers and colonists.

Great find... your ring is a type 1A...
Interlocked A and M... Auspice Maria... meaning marias protection.
Also... its the mark for the Society of Saint Sulpice
