The weather looks nicer than it is, but i wanted out of the house. I went to my first construction site, no luck there it's mostly fill now. Went back to an older place and noticed some concrete and dirt in a pile. I went to the south side of the pile, the snow would be melted off there. I scanned around and got a good signal, one that means indian head with out even digging. I poked away with my pick and ended up with an 1864 Indian head. With that I headed home content. The way I look at it, it isn't bad for Feburary. The coin has that corrosion on it, but the liberty is in the head band.

You might try this to clean it. Get one of the brushes for golf clubs it has nylon brisles on one side and brass on the other. I find it work good on those self destructing zinc pennys. It gets the corrosion off and should leave the patina. Try it out on a modern penny and see for your self. Good luck

Hi Free,
Was wondering if you checked to see if your 1864 is an L variety? Would be worth quite a bit more if it is.

Nice Indian! It's always nice to dig an old coin in the winter to get over those winter blues. Chris

Seeing the L is going to be tough, because the L is one of the high spots and tends to wear off before the Liberty. Another way to check for an L is to look at the bust. If its pointed, its an L. If not, its a regular 1864.

And nice find by the way. Indian heads are my favorite.

Treasure Hunta,

Indian head cents are an American coin that was minted from 1859-1909. There are several key days worth substantially more then others, and most are highly desirable, especially to a detectorist, as they are alot rarer then Lincoln cent/Wheat Cents, and they can help "date" a site.

Hey Free,

Can you post a larger image of it? A close up if you can.

Thanks,
Rod
