were marbles smaller before the 40 's ?

Good day gentlemen. Please forgive my lazy lack of pictures, but I don't feel like digging through bags of past finds. I derive great pleasure from finding old marbles while detecting. I will not collect anything after say about the fifties, when the Japanese flooded with cat eyes. I toss anything not deemed 'older' to my amateur/casual collecting, and the 'modern' cat eyes are not interesting at all. I have a lot to learn but I do have an out standing question........ Were marbles, in general, of a smaller size pre-say 1940's. I have sure found my share is small marbles. Thanks for any insight.

No, not really. A lot of the old clay marbles were a bit smaller than the standard 5/8", but the glass marbles were normally pretty close to 5/8". There were smaller and larger ones made before and after the 1940s.
