I should add that I found this in Terre Haute, Indiana and that there is a West Union, Indiana not far from there.

You can rule out the West Unions in Indiana (both of them) since the first post offices there were established in 1829 and 1886.

USPS records are thoroughly incomplete but these are all the ‘West Union’ possibilities (past and present, including rural stations and temporary offices) that I know of with the establishment dates for their first post offices.

Illinois: 1876
Indiana 1829 (Knox Co); 1886 (Clark Co)
Iowa: 1850
Kansas: 1874
Kentucky 1866
Minnesota: 1860
Mississippi 1969
Missouri: 1871
New York: 1847
Ohio: 1805
Oregon: 1874
Pennsylvania: 1876
South Carolina: 1834
West Virginia: 1825 (Marshall Co); 1845 (Doddridge Co)

So, as far as I know, only Illinois and Pennsylvania fit the 1876 establishment date. Pennsylvania ceased operation in 1917 whereas Illinois continued through to the present and is the only one that would have had a centenary in 1976.
