Specialist collecting is rather complex and there is a special group who specialize in this variety.

If you put "Dahlonega Mint Coin" into google you'll find lots of reading.

One thing I like about your coin is it appears to still have some of its dug antiqued gold tone. Gold does take on a certain darker reddish/yellow tone if buried a long time.

The mistake many make is they clean their gold coins to make them shiny. People will buy coins online and say to themselves: "I can make this look better." So they clean it with soap and buff it. To the naked eye it looks great...big mistake!

Keep digging those D's 8)

Back when gold coins were in use about 1 in 10,000 coins were gold. I would think however they were not the most lost coin by type; penny, nickle, dime etc.

Also as a detecting club member with 50 members. There have been 5 gold coins found in over twenty years by only 4 people. Not real good odds.

If you go where the coins were in wider use, out west, you could in crease your odds.

Dahlonega Mint! WOW!

You have any idea what the odds are against finding one of those? I'd say it's at least 1000 times easier to find a common mint $5 gold piece than a D mint!

Ain't that the truth!? ;D
