I found this along the edge of a field a few weeks ago. I thought it was just trash because it was caked with mud but when I cleaned it up I saw there is a date on the back 1884. Any ideas of what it could have been?

Seeing the pic from fisherman1 I think you guys are right. It's nice to have a date on it. When I first found it it was bent in a u shape. Thanks for all replies.

The 1884 is not the date it was made. It could be a patent date but likely just a model number. If they put dates on everything they would have to change the mold every year and it would not be a financially viable thing to do.

I didn't think of that I guess I just assumed it was a date since the house was from the early 1800's.
