I found this on a coastal ridge at a job site. The context is correct. What would this be, if anything? A fire starter? It looks like there is heavy wear inside the divot.
Also a 4 lb porcini. You know they were hunting those too...

Around here we call those stone caps for fire starting "thunderbirds". It looks like it could be one. Gary

Its possible, looks about the size I would expect to see. Almost impossible to say 100% unless viewing in person, and even then for this sort of relic it could be difficult.

It's hard to believe that something that regularly shaped could be anything but an artifact, but nature can be a freak. We may never know for sure, but like you, it would come home with me.

Quito, I tried looking up what an Omar is and only came up with politicians... any way to date this type of lithic? I’m assuming they would have been used over a long period of time.

Edit: I just read up on Omars...this is from coastal California so I doubt it is one.

The porcini? I got it right before Christmas. The mushrooms are going crazy around here now, including the chicken of the woods. Your area too Southfork...chanterelle is likely coming up.
