I found this "bit" piece of silver last year - found in 1600-1700 colonial field
luckily I had my pro-pointer that day - it was mucky where this was found
I have found bit pieces of silver in the past - this is the smallest - was tarnished and knew it was silver
just put it in my colonial display case
was bored and looked thru my case - pick this up and wet my finger and wiped it - thought I saw something
looks like part of a cross -
so what do you think - cut up cob or more recent reale
other side is smooth
I was always told that a piece like this was worth a pint of ale at taverns

Casper,
Looks like a Mexico minted reales, cut.
No details on the other side?
Nice find...

Sure is.
Are you sure there is no part of the Monogram on the other side?
Here is a Mexico mint half reale I found recently on a 1715 fleet wreck beach.

I have no idea what happened with my photos..
I bet with the date of your site it's probably a Phillip V or Charles II

Casper-2,

Trez is spot on about it being a cut or clipped
Mexico minted cob...

Unfortunate that the other side has no details visible, but at least you have an idea about what time frame you are working with on your site... Very cool find!

Just to let you know (in case you weren't aware), the side of the coin with the monogram, or shield, or pillars and waves designs (depending upon which mint and denomination a coin is from), is the obverse or front side and the side with the cross is the reverse or backside of the coin. Not that it matters when it comes to the excitement if the find, but just for your edification.

Keep digging and be blessed with many more finds!
