I call this my "finishing shovel". I use it to shave the dirt in very small increments. It weighs virtually nothing and rings like a bell when it comes in contact with material. This first pic is the one I've been using for over a 2 yrs. now.

The bottom one is a brand new one with a pull-back root cutter.

I have several extras that I'm going to put in the classified section today.

Here is what I use to dig ..A nice tarp to remone the overburden, folding shovel, and a pick-stick...
I remove large parts of the wall, then go though it on the tarp..Works for me..lol

A regular shovel that I sharpen the bit end, sometimes a saw or hatchet for roots, going to use a trench shovel this season see if it works better getting around roots and a hand trowel and of course sifters.

I use a large screwdriver. Been digging now for about 9 years. I've been through about 5 or 6 of them because I try to dig before the frost has completely left the ground and end up snapping them trying to pry the next bunch of dirt towards me!!!
