no clue, pretty interesting though. is it thicker then a usual quarter? it seems to have a little extra nickel layer?

the copper core is softer and more reactive than the cupro-nickel faces; it was dissolved essentially. It may have been a beach coin at some point.

It is the same all they way around, it has the edge reeding down inside what appears to be the two parts, and actually isn't 2 parts. It looks like something pressed the reeding down in the center, leaving the two edges, looks like an oreo cookie! I should have explained better in my original post, sorry!

That could be. The edge is reeded inside like it was dipped in acid.

Here is another picture at a little different angle. Maybe this will help.

i catch and release these all the time...i believe sometimes coins get caught in coin counters at a weird angle etc., and the counter chews out the middle of the edge of the coin...still kind of interesting. keep it up and hh! [R.I.P. Rich Hartford]

Here is another picture, maybe you can see how the center is lower than the two sides.

It looks like it could possibly be a botched attempt at magnetically shrinking a clad quarter. Clad coins do not shrink well due to the dissimilar metals shrinking at different rates at a particular magnetic pulse strength. I would hazard a guess that this was attempted with way too little discharge energy to get much shrink effect, especially on the cladding. Copper reacts stronger to magnetic pulses than cupro-nickel.

I get a few hundred dimes per month like that, and they are almost always from 1965 to 1967. What year is your quarter?

It looks like someone used it in a machine of some sort. back in the day, coins were replacements for washers for many uses, and more abundant. (Before Ace hardware and Walmart with all the litle parts you need nowadays) People used coins for many uses. Could have used this as a gear of some sort. I saw some in use this way all the way back in the 70s, but not recently. Now hardware is easy to buy and store. MY guess is that someone hollowed this out and used it as a gear. Or something else where they needed it hollowed out. Jusd a guess.

Some where I have a couple of coins like that. If I can find them I'll add a picture of them.
The center is lower than the edges . I found mine while working 50 feet up in the air , against a metal building, they were on a narrow ledge. there is over spray on the coins which led me to think the coins had been up there for at least 12 years, because that was the last time the building was painted . I think the excessive heat of the Mohave Desert against the building warped the coins I found.
