If I remember correctly. Off a canteen cover. It had a ball shape on a pin that snapped into the part you have. the ball/pin was on the top cover and the hole (yours) was on the cover/bag that held the canteen. I think it was from WWII.

Aabsolutely guys. Used on everything from knapsacks to medics pouches. Not sure if it was used in WW1 but maybe?
