Hi all. I am new to gold, in fact haven't even gotten the pans I ordered yet, but I was at the American River and found this flaked gold lying about in the water. It's bendable, soft, very bright, and was easy to spot. It doesn't break or snap or crumble. What is this stuff? is it gold?

It didn't float; If I reached for a piece of it it would settle quickly down to the sand under the water.

If it is gold then it has been through a lot and under magnification it will look porous so I would take a look at it under at least 10X magnification. If it is gold then it should thin out when tapped with a "small" hammer", I would do this on top of a piece of steel and I would have plenty of white catch rags laying around in case one of the hammer strikes causes it to fly away, you can see it on a white rag. If it thins (smears) each time you strike it then its a good possibility it is gold as the color in the first picture looked good. Welcome to Tnet and you might look up "Batpan" on the internet..................63bkpkr

I would say its gold. Found the same kind of gold at Mineral Bar, brought it to Pioneer Mining in Auburn and confirmed that it is indeed flattened gold.
