Is it just a tractor part or something more? Dug it out from beside the site of a 200 plus year old farm. It's heavy iron or something and it was a good 16 inches down. Did I spend 2 hours carefully digging up scrap metal ?

That is a crankshaft. At an early 20th-century farm site near me there is an old manure spreader next to the barn debris pile, and it has one of those, looks just like it but a little smaller. Here, you can kinda see it in this pic I took.

I wouldn't call it junk, clean it up, paint it black, plant it in your flower garden and hang something from it.:dontknow:

I'm kinda leaning towards the fire place.but to me it looks like the part that the logs lay on can't think of the name right now.but there should be another side and a cross piece. It would stand up like in the third pic down and the logs would lay on it.maybe

Not so sure about tbe crank now, this thing is square and something is definitely different about it.

If it turns out to be the hearth tool, that is quite an awesome find. Congrats!

Happy Hunting!

I certainly see what you mean. But it does have the two holes for bolts on the one end... Could be a different style perhaps

I'd only looked at the first pic when I hit 'reply' and didn't realize there were more pics, so I didn't immediately realize it was square and not round. Definitely not a crankshaft, then. I'm gonna agree with John Boy and say andiron. There were so many varieties made, and that was assuming that yours wasn't hand-forged. Soak it in apple cider vinegar for a while and see if you can't uncover a maker's mark.
