yes i am quite familiar with the 1715 era fleet salvage vessel lost at amelia island / tablot island - nassau sound wreck site ----(even put a article in the local paper years ago to show when and where and how I found its location so the state of florida could not say its archies "found" it first --instead of me-- i went public beat em to the punch)--- but its a "dead issue" site since the state od florida citing "aquatic preserve zone" wiill not issue permits for it for "commerical salvage" and removing anything without a proper permit is looting and will get you jailed.

i have been told "off the record" that only non profiet salvage via hooking up with a university to pull the permits could be done --but that way the state and university keep all the goods off the wreck -- I even been told where to find "funding" grants at to fund the project-- once I bite on that hook --the state archies and thier college buddies would have a feild day on the wreck site --and all I get is to write a book about it --How I found a treasure ship and got screwed royally by the state of florida --so I said NO THANKS--and if you folks touch the wreck I discovered without me getting a decent share of it --see you in court .

I will not let them "strong arm" me into basically giving them my wreck for nothing just so I can publicly get the credit for "discovering it" and write a book / maybe sell movie filming rights

the wreck site is clearly shown on capt william fullers map of nov of 1769 --plan of amelia island , florida --use the zoom in feature to see it better. --theres also a 1778 french version of the 1769 map as well.

Way to improvise , adapt and overcome Fisheye :headbang: It maddens me to no end that we may never see the artifacts and be able to study the colonial culture that is right here under our noses. Pray that free enterprise prevails - if not these sites will be lost forever. Every hour of every day these sights are degrading and melting back into the earth. :dontknow: :help:

the state refuses to issue a permit for the area --"off limits" they say --they even went as far as years ago making the local beaches at talbot state park "off limits to metal detecting at the northern end" ( the bay where the wreck is at) and -- just a few years ago they got the southern tip of amelia island and turned it into a state park as well and made it too "off limits" to metal detecting those beaches as well.--

It seems last summer as I was researching Florida State Park policy on detecting...finally emailed the Florida State Park service office headquarters, the reply came speedily and from the national office information specialist. You can read about this here...

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,186322.0.html

They were quick to deny, that metal detecting at Florida state beach parks, between the waterline and base of dune, is banned...except for historical or DHR sites. But if you read all the guideline in the park handbook, the provision is made for those running a particular state park, to make portions of the beach off limits, if they should decide to do so.

It is required for a state park to post in plain sight, at the office the notice of where these off limit portions of the beach are located. Otherwise it does not follow the guidelines written in their published handbook.

trust me the northern part of talbot state park --by nassau sound area where the wreck is located * and the southern tip of amelia island state park --- are both "off limits" to metal detecting --- i know this for a fact -- if you think otherwise try it and see what happens -- :stop: :violent1: :icon_pale: :whip2: :nono:

I've tumled around the sifter idea. I have tried the Garrett 14" classifier gold pan as a sifter. The green Garrett plastic is super tough, the classifier pan won't let dimes slip through the holes. I've added a galvanized rabbit cage mesh cut circle insert for the pan bottom inside. Twisted some pieces of thin stainless wire to hold it in place. Beach testing the sifter...out of the water, packed sand breaks up, you just dig with the wide coin trowel and dump into pan.

At the waterline, places where the target was lost in years past using smaller long handle scoops...first try, turning the pan sideways I brought up a penny that escaped me many seasons ago. A pan sideways goes down wide and deep, to scoop what other scoops miss.

I see in my post I said national office, meant state office...they act as though it was so. I've had those aquatic reserves come up, when zooming in to take a good look at places pirates cached their loot. Pirates were in the salvage business too!

If a person took a vacation to a state park, thinking it would be ok to metal detect on a 1715 beach, let's say like Sebastion Inlet...probably might be disappointed.

The way I understand it, anything found in the water must be turned into the state, even if you'll get to keep it. So, when detecting is allowed on a beach of a Florida state park...still can't hunt in the water.

I'm not clear on where shipwreck claims stop on a beach. Would this be at the waterline, off-shore, or a certain distance up past the waterline? I know salvors are either required or asked to by the state, doing salvage near the waterline, to work these places off season for tourist times.

I know when the PI Fisher detector was new, they did a lot of testing it on shore of the 1715 sites. By the time all the testing got finished, a lot of those black beach pebbles had been collected which after cleaned turned out to be Spanish silver coins.

I don't dive, but it would take a special dive mask for me, like prescription glasses...only for diving. I haven't checked to see if they make such a mask with optical correction vision. Then of course, you'd need a good dive suit, fins. Much treasure salvage is done in fairly shallow water.

Investors get to dive, would be hard for someone living out of state, without a place to stay down there...most of the treasure is in the water. I suppose a person could be an investor and hunt on shore of a shipwreck claim, but if you go just for a vacation that hardly could be justified to become an inverstor. To dive for a company that gets contracts, don't you need some kind of certification in diving?

There are money beaches with resort hotels, might be expensive even in the off seasons. It depends whether shipwreck claims would have any rights to the beach.

 Red_Desert, to your question of optics, yes, they have prescription masks available. It may be cheaper to use a pair of your glasses with the arms removed and affix them into a mask. This works very well and is a lot cheaper than masks with the optics built in. If cost is not an issue then get the prescription lenses in the mask.

As for certification, never, NEVER go diving without getting certified first. I started diving in 1958. Back then rules were minimal and equipment was mostly home made. Double hose regulators were the best you could get. My Gold Star system is setting in a dive shop display along with my old triangular mask. They call them antique dive equipment. Tanks were often made from old fire extinguishers.

Now there are so many rules and safety laws that, had they been in place then, no one would have learned to dive. I believe that Lloyd Bridges in the old Sea Hunt TV series did more for sport diving than anyone. Cousteau made it possible for anyone to be a diver with his regulator system. Sea Hunt gave everyone the urge to try it.

Learn the dangers and how to dive properly before going in anything deeper than a shallow backyard pool. Even then, don't try it alone.

At least now, that with the prescription mask, know it could be possible for me to dive. Physically, it is possible, because I have for many years and still do work out on my weight set, lifting weights. Not a too heavy of work out, but enough it keeps me thin...always could use a couple extra pounds, but eating more food doesn't seem to help as much as I'd hoped. Of coarse, I eat a lot of veggies, probably the reason. :icon_sunny:

Sharks, sounds dangerous, even just to think about it. Maybe I should leave diving to the pros.

:laughing9: Yup, the sharks that swim on the land are the worse. in over 50 years of diving and swimming I have only encountered several large sharks. Most sharks are small and just curious and will leave in short order. consider yourself lucky to see a shark like you would seeing a giant grouper or dolphin. Just show them a little respect.

Detecting and exploration, spending lots of time in the water with friends, cooking out, swapping tales and information and just having fun is what it is all about. Hitting that big strike is a dream and always back there in the dusty corner of your mind. I would rather be anchored out, snorkeling, diving and exploring than anything. If friends come along, so much the better. My wife just had a very bad fall and is in the hospital waiting to go to surgery later today so our anchoring out will be on the back burner for some time to come. We live aboard our boat, the one in our avitar, and usually travel all over just diving, fishing and playing on the water. The health problems over the past few years have put a damper on anchoring to far away from civilization but we still get time to do a lot of things. Aquanut's cookouts are awesome. We got to meet some very knowledgable real treasure hunters and made many, many new friends. Check out the past thread on aquanuts cookout farther down on Shipwrecks. The main thing is not to let negitive input discourage you from hunting in the water or anywhere else. This is our really fun hobby and we do it because we enjoy it. Rewards are counted in many differant ways.
Keep Hunting! :laughing9:

Oh White Feather, my dad had a bad fall a couple years back...landed on concrete patio from a deck above. The deck was under construction, he moved some walk on boards and one slipped off the edge of a joist. My dad went into surgery, broke 5 places in the hips/pelvis area, cracks in a rib and collar bone. I know a bad fall can take months, even a year to recover from. My parents are still in their 70s, retired, work outside on the large property landscaping and gardening. They keep busy and in the best health. I don't have to take care of them, more like I've got to help with the work from spring until freeze up. It is already cold, killing frost probably this week.

I have all winter now, need to find me a vacation destination. I'm from Elkhart county, we don't have any jobs. Obama helped get started an electric car company, just several miles west of here. I suppose that sometime the company will produce a few jobs, but for now the jobless rate is still high. I had been in new home construction until Y2K...in 2000, began factory work in a boat company. The very last job I had was in boats. I guess If somebody asked me, what is my occupation...I would say "boat builder" except there is no work, not many boats are being sold anymore. I started with installing the furniture on a pontoon line. Went to floors putting deck, carpet, side trim on, then finally making the doors to the gates and installing them. I'm just a boat builder now, out of work.

I wasn't in debt, as so many people are, had my car and everything I own paid off. Made good money on the boat line, it's not like I'm broke. Then my parents grow a surplus of garden food, put away enough for to survive for years, if ever a food shortage. It's not crisis but I'm hoping to get into treasure hunting more, maybe call it my occupation...would be nice!

I like the idea of living on a boat, warm gentle breeze blowing, maybe fish a little. I used to fish around here, not in recent years, fishing just isn't all that great like it once was in the last century.

 Ahoy Red_Desert, The Doctor says the wife may get to come home later today if her heart stays normal. Yesterday she had a little problem with high heart rate for a few minutes but they said it was most likely from the pain and would calm down as the pain subsides. I have to build a way to get her on and off the boat while the arm and foot are in casts. We normally use a step ladder at the dock and a transom ladder from the stern when on anchor but they both require two hands. Now I need to build something that she can get aboard with without breaking the bank.
I'm also a long time boat builder and designer. I also built molds for a well known yacht builder. As for work down here. There is plenty of work but the pay is down because of the same problems you have up your way. This is the time to buy a boat because the market is awful. People are losing their homes and even those just losing value are hurting. Usually, when the economy drops people will sell their toys before their homes. I am just the opposite. I'd dump the house before they would get my boat. Your best bet to find work in boats is to get some business cards out there with boat repairs and the like on them. You won't get rich at it right now but there is a lot of work and really good boat repairmen are hard to find. If you do a few really good, fair priced and honest repairs and refinishing you will find yourself in very high demand very quickly. Honest and fair priced boatwrights are rare and when boat owners find them the word spreads really fast. Give everyone you meet about boat repairs several of your cards. We really do spread them around. Word of mouth is the best advertising. When one of us needs work on our boat we ask friends who they reccommend in the area where we are at the time. As travelers(cruisers) we tend to always be in new areas and depend on local knowledge of other cruisers to get things done.

Getting a boat has never been easier. If this is the lifestyle you want, go for it! It is not a cheaper way out. I own a house and a large boat. The house is the anchor to me. I am trying to give it away to the tenants I have in it but they can not get a loan. So, now I am financing it, paying the insurance, taxes and all sorts of fees. People say we avoid taxes and all sorts of fees by living on a boat. Maybe we get off from paying a few things but we pay out in many other ways. We are taxed on buying the boat just like the house. We pay for haulouts, materials that are three to five times higher than for a home. Our paint runs $120 t0 $150 a gallon. We have to repaint every three to five years. It takes about 5 gallons to paint my boat. Then you have to haul out, more taxes, and paint the bottom with paint that can run near $200 a gallon. Don't forget the taxes you pay on materials and labor. Boat hardware costs many times what you pay for home furnishings and such. Your house won't sink if you ignore problems to long. I have had two problems with failing pumps and broken hoses. If you get a sink leaking in your house you may get a wet floor or it may even warp or damage something. If I get a serious leak, especially if I'm not home, my house will SINK! You can not imagine the cost of repairs if your house sinks. You can not imagine the loss of nearly everything you own. If you want to live aboard you should think very seriously of all the abilities and knowledge you will need. Like they say, there are no plumbers at sea. There are also no electricians, carpenters, painters, mechanics, transmission repairmen or anyone else to depend on. It's YOU! You have to be able to do it all and know what you are doing.

Sorry for getting so long winded. I can help you any time you want if you want to PM or email me. I may take a bit to get back to you but I will eventually.

I know what you mean about the taxes deal...my state is one of those states that tax everything. Boats, RVs/campers, anything you use for a home business, including your personal computer, printer. We did have a pet tax you'd pay every year, just as with boats and trailers, but they got rid of it. How would you feel if your dog or cat was taxed? All this is under state property tax, is automatic yearly until changed.

Well, living out of a boat was a nice thought. It does seem to have some disadvantages. For now just want to get a vacation to do some treasure hunting. Soon, the ground will be frozen. It is supposed to warm up next week again...just for a few days and rain, maybe storms. Then the cold weather is going to set in. I've been wearing a winter coat and cap when outside. Went from summer weather (shorts, T-shirt) right into the harsh reality of approaching winter season. The fields were green, now brown and leaves on trees turning quickly.

Last year at this time, went to Arizona...it would be this weekend in fact, but 1 year ago. I drove the whole trip myself, alone and was twice the distance of my house to Florida. I met some nice prospecting people out there, had a good time with campfire and their good cooking, coffee. That made the whole trip worthwhile. Don't feel up to driving alone again for a trip this year. Was thinking about just booking a resort motel and riding a bus down, except haven't checked the prices yet...might be shocked at what I'd spend. Especially if on one of the Florida Keys. I would have plenty of beach to go detecting and really nothing else to do except treasure hunt. The problem would be eating and the bus limited amount of stuff you can bring with you. Normally, with my car I pack plenty of canned food, packs of food stuff to eat. I can go a whole trip without needing a place to buy a meal.

Glad to hear your wife is ok, maybe it won't be so bad for you White Feather. Well, that will still be a lot of work getting her in and out of the boat. Do you get out much at beaches? I suppose you'd have to be anchored, wade in and up to the shoreline. Florida weather is really nice in the fall. I'll bet the tourists are starting to pour in.

What ships of 1715 fleet are you close to? Get to dive on any of the shipwreck claims? I'm sure they aren't all worked out yet, there is still good treasure down under the sand. :icon_sunny:
