I was very close to my Grandmother and she used to have sayings that ring true even today...

One that I remember is; "Not every shut eye is sleeping."

Do you know of any old time sayin's?

Best Wishes,
Scott

My dads advice was, There aint no free lunch, and the piper will be paid. Bob

I've heard that before Bob.

The things I said he said above were actually just made up, that's just the joking side of me. ;D

Back when 'I was knee-high to a grasshopper'

He's 'slower than malasses in January'

When little kids had to go to the bathroom, they were taught to
say, "I have to go see Mrs. Murphy."

If someone had a fast reply to put someone in their place they
would then say, "Well, I guess I snapped your garter!'

A working wife is worth more than a pumping oil well.

Of course grandpa said that when oil was about $2.00 a barrel. I still wish for the oil well.

An old black man who was a dear friend of mine once told me, "I've been around the teacup, I know where the chip is."

Makes alot of sense in the right circumstance...

Back in 1904 in Indian Territory, my great grandpa said 'Of course I'm carryin a gun. It's right here.' Then those law dogs shot him dead.

My dad used to say, Penny wise and pound foolish. Interestingly, he was the most penny wise and pound foolish man I ever knew. If we were making hay, and we could see the storm clouds moving in, he'd stop us before we went back to the field, and carefully sweep the chaff on the wagon into a basket, when we were about to have 100 bales of hay rained on.

Hmmmm...
"Penny wise, pound foolish."
That certainly is something the old timers would say.
I'm guessing that the origin came from England to the colonies. You know, Ben Franklin and others of that time..."Poor Richards Almanac..."

I've always been intrigued about word and phrase origin. The name for such study is called etymology.

Anyone have a word or phrase etymology? Like, "The whole nine yards?" (hint: it has nothing to do with football)

Best,
Scott
