Broke the local coinstar machine after it took 70 coins. I have another 1100 or so to go. Out of 1190 coins found since January atleast 20% of the coins have sustained so much damage from lawn mowers, the weather and heavily mineralized soil. It's not surprising that a high percentage of the damaged coins are zinc coated pennies.

Does anyone know when the US mint stopped manufacturing the copper pennies? ???

Like to hear some of your suggestions regarding what to do with the corroded coins. (...Be nice now!) ...My significant other says "Throw them out!" Be creative... ::)

"Zincolns" start mid 1982. Some '82s are copper, some aren't

Whoa, yours look a lot worse than mine. I was going to say weave them in with good pennies. I will admit that I have thrown a few out. They are only pennies after all. If you have a lot of dimes, nickels and quarters try taking them to the bank and see if they will trade you for good ones. Generally the banks have the opportunity to send the bad ones to the Fed and get new ones.

I usually just put mine in the tumbler to clean 'em, then roll 'em up and take 'em to the bank.

I leave the worst ones on the back of the flatbed. There's a weird guy that walks by the shop picking up used cig. butts with a drag or two left and he swipes the pennies when he sees them. The rest get mix rolled and taken to the bank.

The building I work in has a stamp machine in the lobby. I use all my crappy pennies in it and it hasn't rejected one yet. If you put in the stamp price plus a dollar then buy a single stamp. It will give you a stamp and a new dollar coin. I'm sure the post office machines are the same way. Sometimes I have to put a handfull of the worst pennies between my palms and rub them together to remove the thick crud. Hope this helps. HH dave. :O)

Do you need more zinc in your diet??? A zinc penny a day keeps the doctor away.

Only kidding...I would not eat one everyday.

My suggestion is place them all in a plastic container then bury it in a sand box at the local park. It would be a great treasure for a little kid to dig up. I'm sure it would make their day.

that is an awesome idea how cool would that be for some kid to find!

my suggestion save them all over the years, when your old and grey have them melted down and make your own currency, then go throw them all over the place through out the town you live in. someday in the future some other md'erist find them and wonder who the hell you were. :-\ be funny though
