This is a 7mm pinfire cartridge. Can you get a better view of the headstamp or by any chance still see what it is? That would help me date it for you.

That is freaking cool , some troops did carry pistols that fired those but due to lack of supply support issues it as limited use, and some cases where reused with a mod'd percussion cap on the nipple /pin to make reloads more info mid way down on this link Sgt Riker's Civil War Trading Post - Cartidges....ps looks to be 7.5 mm cartridge [FONT=&quot]
