What's the deal with all of the Half-Horseshoes

In my search for relics I have found 6 half-horseshoes, all broken in exactly the same plan.

First question: Why only half? I am assuming these were discarded when they broke, but I am curious
Second question: Is there a way to tell whether these are older, say possibly from CW Cavalry?

Are you sure they are not ox shoes?
They kind of look like half a horse shoe, and are probably very old.

Mountain horses were only shod on the downhill side of the hoof.

How do you come home on one of those mountain horses if you want to use the same trail?

It's simple, you change legs. ;)

Or maybe those mountain horses had reverse.

Now that a problem. You either continue around the hill or mountain until you see where you began or simply backup.

If you try to turn around you may have a severe list on the down hill side, depending on the degree of the slope. You could side-pass but then you'd be going uphill.

See how a stupid joke gets convoluted.

A couple of mine look very similar to that, but I am having trouble getting my picture small enough to fit in the post. As soon as I figure it out I will post them.

They look like ox shoes to me.
They could easily be pre-Civil war.

I've heard that cattle in mountain areas have two short legs and two long legs. ;D

Re: What's the deal with all of the Half-Horseshoes

ya, that happened with our cattle but we bred em' with bulls from the other side of the mountain and the calves came out normal. Might even work with mountain horses. The oxen shoes i've seen were much flatter and wider. These shoes look like work horse shoes that have been purposely had the toe cut out. Maybe in hard times to use on a different horse than the one they were made for. Any farriers out there?

Farrier is the guy that makes and shoes horses for a living nowadays. was kinda hoping one would let us know if partial shoes could be put on a hoof. Theres still a few old "Mother Earthers" that train and use oxen for logging, etc and shoes are still available somewhere.

Re: What's the deal with all of the Half-Horseshoes

Horseshoes were sometimes cut in half to shoe oxen but a purpose made ox shoe is significantly different than the ones in your pictures.

An ox shoe generly has a small front and rear while horseshoes have larger calks on the rear of the shoe.

My grandfather used oxen to snake the larger logs till well after WW1.
