This is a great tool for locating old maps, as well as digitized old newspaper articles and books:

https://www.loc.gov/

This is also a great site for placing the old maps on top of google maps:

Compare maps

good luck and happy hunting!

I am new to hunting and I was wondering if I could get some help on websites and ideas on places on the internet to research for places to look, such as abandoned mills and other places there would have been congregations of people in the past?

Some libraries will have them

I've been pounding the local Historical Societies. Nearly every little town here in Northern Illinois has one...And they are virtual conucopias of information. I've purchased books at several of them that I never knew existed. Extremely helpful. 😁

I have found most of those online, but there have not been any maps other then the topo maps, so nothing to see old post offices, houses and like that. we do not have a historical society or even a library, but there is one about 45 minutes to 1 hour away, but I am not sure what they have for my area in the boonies.
Thank you for all the ideas though, please keep them coming

If you don't mind, would you share the town and state in question?

Here is one of the best research sites that I've ever run across in several decades of research. I have gotten several good treasure hunting leads from ghost towns listed here for my state.

Museums in small towns will have maps of their local areas like platt maps.
